This template is meant to help teams and design leaders (re)define success for their projects, products, or services. Successful design is more than just desirable, feasible, and viable - it needs to be healthy, equitable, and sustainable as well.

Engage your team and stakeholders in a kick-off session, and use the Wheel of Success to brainstorm and decide which objectives you want to achieve within those dimensions of success, and how to measure them. Then, capture the outcome in a project brief.

It’s ideally used at the start of a new project as part of a dedicated kick-off session, but can be used as well in the middle of a project or ongoing product development to re-align everyone on what’s important.

The procedure is as follows:

  1. Gather the entire design team, including relevant stakeholders and/or clients.

  2. Brainstorm with the whole team what could be objectives and leading metrics for your project, product, or service. Write each idea on a sticky note in the right area.

  3. Discuss, vote, and decide which objectives and metrics you want to pursue.

  4. Summarise your decisions in a project brief.
