Use the Virtual Event Icebreakers Template to host a fun and engaging digital session with your distributed or remote team.
About the Virtual Event Icebreakers Template
Keeping participants engaged during a virtual event is tricky — especially if no one knows each other. Using the Virtual Event Icebreakers Template can help with this problem.
With Miro’s free template, you can host a virtual team-building activity to connect with your colleagues and get to know each other in a relaxed and comfortable setting. You’ll break down communication barriers, improve your company culture, and remove any feelings of isolation.
Use the map to show where you’re dialing in from, leave a comment with a little bit about yourself, and play some fun online games to get everyone involved. At the end of the session, everyone will be ready to collaborate and discuss the rest of your virtual meeting agenda.
How to use the Virtual Event Icebreakers Template
Miro’s virtual workspace is the perfect place for virtual teams to connect and collaborate. You can have video chats, share updates in real time, and easily communicate with colleagues with messages and comments.
When you’re ready to host your online meeting, start by selecting this template. It’s easy to use, so you can start planning immediately without any training. Then, follow these steps to create the perfect virtual icebreaker.
Step 1: Customize the template. Miro’s template has two fun icebreakers that are ready to use. The first is for everyone to pin their location on the map, which is a great way to get the conversation flowing about where you live, what it’s like, and what you enjoy about it. The second is to use the pen tool to draw your favorite fruit. Drawing an image with a virtual pen isn’t as easy as it sounds, so you’ll probably find that a lot of people in the meeting will find the whole situation pretty funny. As you can imagine, this is a great way to make participants feel comfortable.
You can easily customize both of these virtual icebreakers if you want to mix things up. You can also add images, visuals, and charts to any of the slides.
Step 2: Test the template. Before you run the virtual meeting, make sure that all your systems are working and that you’ve included everything you need in your template. To do this, you can share the template with peers to get feedback and make sure everything runs smoothly. They can add comments directly into the template, making it easier for you to review their suggestions.
Step 3: Host the event. Share the template with remote employees and ask everyone to join the board. You can then hop into presentation mode to deliver the virtual meeting. This will put your presentation on full screen, and you can move through the slides using the arrow keys.
What’s included in the Virtual Event Icebreakers Template?
The template includes two virtual icebreakers — pinning your location and drawing your favorite fruit. Here are some of the features that allow you to host these icebreakers.
Pinning locations. Virtual teams can pin their locations on a shared map to show everyone where they live. They can also add their name to the pin, so everyone in the online meeting can see who the pins belong to. Users can also add multiple pins to show all the places they’ve lived in the past and where they want to visit in the future.
Drawing with the pen tool. Using a mouse, trackpad, or touchscreen, your remote team can use the pen tool to add freehand drawings to your board. You can also use the smart drawing feature to convert freehand lines into accurate shapes. To use this feature, simply choose the pen tool and switch to smart drawing.

How do you play an icebreaker virtually?
Using Miro’s template, virtual icebreakers are easy to manage. Everyone joins a video call from their remote location — then they’ll follow your lead based on whatever digital icebreaker you’ve created. As the event leader, navigating what happens and when is up to you. You’ll need to clearly state the order you’ll be doing things and make sure people know when they can talk and share information about what they’ve written or drawn. Having someone lead the conversation also helps participants feel more comfortable (and it avoids awkward silence, which is a bonus).
How long should icebreakers last?
Most virtual team-building games last around 5 minutes and ideally no longer than 20 minutes. Of course, this depends on the size of your remote team. If you have a larger team, you’ll be looking at closer to 20 minutes. With a small remote team, you can keep it closer to 5 minutes. The important thing to remember is that if the icebreaker is too long, virtual teams might lose interest — especially because it’s an online meeting, which already makes it harder for them to focus. Keep it short, sweet, and engaging.
What do you say during an ice breaker?
It depends on the type of icebreaker and the team you’re working with. Most people will first introduce themselves and their role at the company and maybe answer a fun trivia question about themselves. As the host, you’ll be in charge of navigating that conversation and making sure everyone has a chance to speak.
How do you end an icebreaker?
When everyone in the remote team has participated, and you’ve had time to talk as a group, you can move on to the rest of the virtual meeting. Usually, it comes to a natural close, and the host moves things along — but make sure things don’t veer off on a tangent too much. You want to keep it under 20 minutes, so be clear about when the icebreaker will finish and move things along when the time comes.
