At every stage of product development, it is crucial to engage with the customer. Two types of interviews are commonly distinguished: problem-focused and solution-oriented.

The problem-focused interview occurs at the earliest stage, when you only have an idea. Its purpose is to understand:

  • Does the problem exist?

  • How significant is the pain point?

  • What value does it bring to the customer?

Conducting problem-focused interviews is essential each time you are creating a new product or considering adding a new feature to an existing one.

  • Develop hypotheses about issues within the Target Audience (TA)

  • Validate the existence of the issue

  • Define a business model (for new products)

  • Hypotheses for new features
