The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly Retrospective

Report

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly is a fun retrospective activity to boost conversations about team improvements. This activity is based on the 1966 spaghetti western movie The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly, starring Clint Eastwood. The activity helps the team focus on the good, get rid of the bad, and turn the ugly into something beautiful.

Optional - Start by playing the The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly (1966) movie trailer.

Icebreaker - Have team members share their favorite Clint Eastwood movies -- those he acted in and/or those he directed. There are quite a few.

Check-In - Use the humorous Clint Eastwood emotional chart to have team members share what emotion most resonates with them at that moment.

The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly retro - Have the team use the stickies with their names on them to identify:

  • The Good – things that went well the last sprint that they want to repeat and do more of.

  • The Bad – things that happened the last sprint that they want to eliminate moving forward.

  • The Ugly – things that did not go so well the last sprint that, with some adjustments, could be turned into something the team wants to keep doing.

Filter and Vote - Use Miro's voting feature to have the team vote on what are the most important items they should address.

Action Items - Take the top two or three voted-on items and identify action items the team can take next sprint to improve.

Kudos Check Out - Have each team member post a stickie acknowledging the great work during the last sprint of another team member.
