Motivators Retrospective

Report

WHAT / WHEN / WHO

This template is for a team situation where you, as a moderator/coach, want to reflect on what motivates people.

The main goal of this format is to support bonding and mutual understanding - the better team members know each other, the higher the chances that there is a high level of trust. That includes knowing why people are different, in this case: that everyone is motivated by different things.

HOW

Most instructions can be found on the board directly. But a few hints and tips:

  • This format can be used in a regular retrospective session (some 90minutes)

  • An option is to skip the sprint part and instead focus only on the first part with the ranking of motivator cards (depending on team size, time, and if, in your specific context, the discussion around the motivators is already useful).

  • Usually, people need some time to reflect on their motivators and how to rank them. Better plan with 10-15 minutes alone for the ranking exercise.

  • Plus 5 minutes for each participant to explain his/her ranking.

  • Usually, other team members listen to the speaker and have some comments or questions after the explanations.

Acknowledgments

The motivator card idea and the card illustrations are taken from Management 3.0 – big thanks to them for this format and all the other well-illustrated ideas.
