Monopoly Retro
If your team loves board games and particularly Monopoly, this template is made for you! To run the retrospective properly, I divided the template in six parts. These are the details to follow:
1) Icebreaker: Choose Your Piece
In this icebreaker, participants will have the opportunity to test the die rolls using the dice thrower on the right (3). The player with the highest result chooses a piece first. The runner-up chooses 2nd etc., until everyone has a monopoly piece to play. They can copy/paste their pieces on the sticker with their names and copy/past also the piece on the START box, ready to go.
2) Retropoly Board
Depending on how much time you will have to run the retro, you can decide to do X numbers of die rolls until you have enough post-it from participants. All participants can roll the dice in the same time and move their pieces depending on the result. The game is simple: if the piece is on a "To Improve" box, they should put a post-it in this section. To improve = Something to improve in the team Start = New idea to implement for the team Stop doing = Problem or something the team should stop doing Continue = Something the team should keep
3) Dice Thrower
This tool, implemented on the board thanks to the icode frame feature, allows all participants to open this website on the board and throw a die. For this icebreaker, I suggest using a die with a large number of sides, and for the game, a 6-sided die.
4) Chance, Community Chest & Agile Jail
If you looked at the board properly, you probably noticed 3 extra boxes. If a participant is on it, he should draw a card from the category. I suggest to the Scrum Master to hide the cards below the appropriate logo on the board. Like this it will look like the real game. You will find funny ideas, but do not hesitate to be creative with it and add more cards!
5) All the Team Ideas
On this section, the team will create post-it with ideas on it depending on the result of the dice. Each of the four section has a color to respect. The ideas should be discussed at the end of the X-throw you decide to do. Between the last throw and the explanation, you can give extra time to create other post-it to be sure that all participant had the opportunity to express properly.
6) Action Items Street
Last but not least, the Action Items. Once all ideas have been discussed, ask as usual the participants to find action items to implement in the next sprint, using ideas they discussed. The game is now over, you have everything you need to improve the team!
