Learning Design Storyboard
If you are developing a course in (higher) education, a clear overview of the components in the course helps you with the development. This storyboard template helps you visualise the setup of your course.
This template combines components and aspect from ABC Learning Design as well as Carpe Diem. The framework and steps of filling in the storyboard are like the Carpe Diem method, and we use the learning types from the ABC method (which are based on the Conversational Framework theory from prof. Dianne Laurillard).
With this storyboard template, you can see at a glance what you are going to cover in a week and how. It is a visual representation of a process that you will build later on. It shows you exactly what activities you need to work on and keeps you from doing any unnecessary work. You can also easily adjust and move elements of your course to a different moment.
You don't have to develop every activity right away. But with the storyboard at hand you do know what the ideal course looks like for you. You can work towards it step by step.
So if, for example, you notice in class that the order of your teaching material is not convenient, you can take the storyboard and see exactly which parts you can shift around so that everything runs more smoothly. Try that out and if it works, great. If it doesn't work, you can adjust things elsewhere.
Steps for using the TeachCase storyboard template
Give each lesson week/column a theme in the orange notes
Think about when you want to test/ assess (formative or summative) and add purple sticky notes at the bottom for the testing moments
Now go ahead and flesh out each lesson week. What content do you have for that week? What learning types can you use to convey it? Cut your content into small, manageable parts and make sure there is variation in learning type, passive/active and synchronous/asynchronous. Try to cover one subject per activity.
Keep in mind the 5-stage model of Carpe Diem. Start by creating the right conditions and support and gradually build towards greater autonomy.
Now choose how you are going to fill in each learning type. So where are you going to make a video, where an online quiz, a podcast etc.... Put this in text on the sticky notes
