Experiential Futures Workshop
The Experiential Futures template provides a hands-on methodology for teams and groups to think creatively about future possibilities. This framework moves beyond abstract scenario planning to create tangible explorations of potential futures through participatory exercises and collaborative ideation.
Developed by the Futures and Design team at Edinburgh Futures Institute, this template guides facilitators through a proven 90-minute workshop that transforms how people engage with uncertainty and possibility. The exercises have been adapted from "The Futures Bazaar: A Public Imagination Toolkit" by Filippo Cuttica and Stuart Candy, and the Experiential Futures Ladder framework developed by Stuart Candy and Jake Dunagan. Using this methodology, participants progress from broad future settings to specific artefacts, creating concrete touchpoints that make alternative futures feel tangible and actionable for present-day decision making.
Workshop Structure The template includes five key phases: welcome and concept introduction (15 minutes), three progressive hands-on exercises (20 minutes each), and a group sharing session where participants present their future worlds and artefacts (15 minutes).
