Career Goal Statement
We know that goals should be SMART (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Time-bound), or the lesser known, MARS (Measurable, Actionable, Realistic, and Strategic). This means that they should be specific, actionable, measurable, realistic and have relevancy. But how do you go about defining your career goal?
I developed this template to help the people I coach to:
a) facilitating their thinking around their career goal, and
b) to help distil their career goal down into a concise statement.
The statement reads:
In the next [time-frame]
I will [outcome] at [company]
To achieve this, I will [resources/knowledge/skills to acquire]
I know this is possible because [my strengths/past successes]
I will know I'm progressing when [leading measurement]
This is the by-product of years of coaching and numerous prototypes to help you develop a powerful but concise statement to articulate your next career goal.
I hope you find it useful!
