Behavior-focused Retrospective - BOIS Retro

Report

The BOIS Team Retrospective is intended to be the pair of "The BOIS Team Canvas".

With the help of this canvas, teams can collect what behaviors they would like to practice in order to achieve the team objectives and which behaviors are undesired.

The BOIS Team Retrospective is a 75-minute retrospective that helps the team to reflect on their cooperation and behaviors in the past increment and analyze the results.

While The BOIS Team Canvas serves the purpose to set the starting stage for a team, the BOIS Retrospective provides a tool to help keep up and evolve the initial agreement.

When to use this retrospective

  • End of a sprint/iteration;

  • End of a project;

  • Whenever you feel that the team should reflect on their past behaviors;

  • When new sustainability actions are needed;

Guide

OBJECTIVES - 5 mins

Start by gathering the team's objectives from the iteration examined.

CATEGORIZE OBJECTIVES - 10 mins

Which objectives were reached (or currently on track) and which objectives were failed (or currently off-track)? Put them in the corresponding box.

GATHER BEHAVIORS - 15 mins

Now gather what behaviors might have impacted the results. What were the behaviors that supported the team to reach its objectives and which behaviors hindered them?

ANALYSE IMPACTS - 15 mins

Check what impact these behaviors had on the objectives. Conduct this exercise for both supporting and hindering behaviors to see the whole picture.

SUSTAINABILITY ACTIONS - 15 mins

Gather what actions the team took to make the originally desired behaviors sustainable. Were all actions made? Or did the team miss something that might have caused the problem?

ACTION POINTS - 15 MINS

Gather action items in three categories:

  • Behaviors: in case a new behavior must be introduced or an undesired one ceased.

  • Sustainability: in case a previously desired behavior is still desired, but its sustainability is not insured.

  • Impact: in case the defined impacts are not properly measured, cannot be measured or new, unknown impacts emerged.

Pay attention to the successfully implemented desired behaviors as well, as those might need some additional action items to keep them up in the long-term.

The BOIS Team Retrospective was created again with my partner-in-crime, Greg Pitcher, and is built on the models of Enterprise Agility University.
