What’s the difference between a Scrum board and a Kanban board?

Both Scrum and Kanban boards visualize work using columns to represent stages of the team's process and cards to track tasks. A Scrum board displays the sprint backlog for a fixed time-box, usually 1–4 weeks, and may include columns like "To Do," "In Progress," and "Done." There are typically no strict limits on how many tasks can be in a column at once. A Kanban board, on the other hand, focuses on continuous work without time-boxing, with columns representing stages of the workflow. It emphasizes optimizing flow by limiting work in progress (WIP) and using process policies to guide tasks through the workflow. Scrum boards are sprint-driven, while Kanban boards are flow-driven, prioritizing smooth progress.

How can a Scrum board benefit my team?

A Scrum board keeps your team aligned, even when you’re working remotely. It gives you a clear, real-time view of task progress and maintains transparency across the team. Everyone gets to see what’s in progress, what’s next, and what’s done. But having a reliable Scrum software or tool can make all the difference. With Miro, for example, you can easily map dependencies, and plan sprints, and conduct retrospectives, all in one place. Plus, Miro can be integrated with your preferred system of record, so your team, and all relevant tasks, can stay productive and connected no matter where they are.
